The PDF industry's own reviewers are candid about this. A 2026 privacy review of Smallpdf — a company it rates as legitimate, Swiss, ISO 27001 certified and GDPR compliant — still concludes that for contracts, medical records, financial statements or anything under professional secrecy, the cloud model itself is the risk, because the file must sit on a server to be processed. A separate comparison puts it more bluntly: neither Smallpdf nor iLovePDF should be trusted with tax returns, legal contracts or medical records.
None of which makes them bad tools. If you're converting a bus timetable, upload it. The question is what you're holding when you reach for one.

The honest summary: Acrobat does more than VellumDoc does. If you need Bates numbering, PDF/A archival profiles, advanced prepress or a mature accessibility checker, buy Acrobat — it's better at those.
